The botanical sanctuary occupies an area of 1,000 hectares. It was established in 1979 in the Sivash lowland between Lake Sivash and Arabat Spit to preserve the virgin steppe with medicinal plants, in particular, the wild chamomile. Crimea's geographical centre is located in the sanctuary and is marked by a special sign.
