This fortress was built at the turn of the 17th-18th centuries by the Ottomans in the narrowest part of the Kerch Strait. Shaped as an irregular pentagon, the fortress has five semi-bastions in the corners, some of them beyond the perimeter of the walls. The name translates from Turkish as "new fortress." In the 19th century, the fortress lost its strategic importance and gradually fell into neglect. At present, all that has survived is fragments of the walls and a semi-bastion on the coastal side.
