One of Crimea's most spectacular mountains, Kastel Mountain, is located on the southern outskirts of Alushta near the village of Lazurnoye. The mountain is 439 m high. The name of the mountain translates from Greek as "fortified area" or "fortress". You can see the remains of the Kastel Fortress on the top of the mountain: fragments of the walls and small fragments of the old foundations protruding from the ground. According to legend, Princess Theodora, the sovereign of ancient Sougdaia [now Sudak], found her last refuge in this fortress.
