The observatory was founded in 1945 at the existing Simeiz branch of the Pulkovo Observatory. Its main part is located in the village of Nauchny. The observatory has the department of the physics of the Sun and smaller solar system bodies, the department of extragalactic research and gamma astronomy, the departments of radio astronomy and geodynamics, and a laboratory of advanced research. A Roscosmos station was built near Nauchny, where scientists conduct observations of space debris.
