The church was designed by architect Gabriel Ter-Mikelov and built in 1909-1917. It is modelled on St Hripsime Church in Etchmiadzin. Vardges Sureniants, a famous Armenian artist was invited to decorate the interior of the church. He is buried in the church cemetery.
