The cave fortress of Chufut-Kale is located 2.8 km from Bakhchisarai, at an altitude of 600 m above sea level. Almost the entire city is carved into the rock. It had two entrances and was naturally protected by rocks from three sides and a man-made wall on the fourth. Inside, there were buildings, armouries, warehouses, a mosque, barracks for the garrison and residential quarters. It even had a small palace. For many years it housed the mint of the Crimean Khanate. The road to Chufut-Kale is through the Holy Dormition Monastery.
