Built by the Byzantines in the 6th century, the Aluston Fortress gradually expanded to become a small fortified city. It is one of Alushta's most important historical landmarks. The ancient Aluston was located right on the bay coast. The convenient geographical position of the Alushta Valley and the bay prompted the Byzantines to build a fortress here. Only one tower and part of the adjacent wall have survived to the present day. Narrow streets adjacent to the Aluston Fortress are the city's oldest part.
