Ivan Aivazovsky first exhibited his works in 1845 and the exhibition occupied part of his home. According to the artist's will, the gallery was transferred to his native city after his death in 1900. In 1922, the gallery received national museum status. The museum collection has about 12,000 seascape paintings, including the world's largest collection of Aivazovsky's works.
