The battery was built in 1840 to defend the entrance to the Sevastopol Bay. Today it is a military architectural landmark and a museum complex located in the cape of the same name in the northern part of the bay. It includes a horseshoe-shaped fortress, a burial ground of the city's defenders and a museum on the battery's history.
