The museum is located at the site of the former South Palace in the Scythian Neapolis, which was the largest fortress on the northern Black Sea coast from the 2nd century BC through the 3rd century AD. Digging at the site began in the early 19th century and has continued ever since. Part of the area will be made suitable for tours only by the end of 2011.
