It was first called the Renaissance Art Theatre. Faina Ranevskaya, Konstantin Stanislavski, Feodor Chaliapin and Alexander Vertinsky performed on its stage. In 1900, Chekhov watched The Seagull staged there by the Moscow Art Theatre actors. The theatre is located in the city centre and is a protected regional cultural landmark.
