Created in 1821 by merchant Volkov, it is the oldest theatre in southern Russia. The original building has not survived. The current building of the theatre was built in 1911 in a neoclassical style with a dash of Art Nouveau incorporated into it here and there. It was designed by architect and Academician Alexei Beketov. The façade and portico are richly decorated with sculptures while the hall and the foyer feature ornate artwork and frescoes and the marble staircases are lined with bronze statues of knights.
