This is the first monument erected in Sevastopol. It was installed to commemorate Alexander Kazarsky, a lieutenant commander who was in charge of the Merkury brig with 18 cannons and on 14 May 1829, during the Russo-Turkish War, won an unequal fight against two Turkish battleships. The monument resembles a truncated pyramid with an ancient trireme at the top. High reliefs portraying Kazarsky and Greek gods Nike, Neptune and Mercury are located in small niches around the podium.
